Easy steps that will help you prepare for your job interview

You have gotten the call and are scheduled to participate in an interview for the job you have always wanted. Here are some things you can do to prepare.


  1. Research: Familiarize yourself with the company for which you plan to work. It is important to always search out the company's mission statement and core values. First, It is important that you are working with a company with whom you share values. Second, you may be asked about how your values line up with the company's mission statement in your interview. If you know someone who works for the company, ask them about the pro's and con's of their work environment from their perspective - in doing so, remember that it is just that, their perspective. Nonetheless, feedback will give you good insight into what a work day may look like.

  2. Review your resume: Make a list of the job description duties, and make a list of your qualifications. Be prepared to talk about how your unique skills will directly match the job requirements.

  3. Be on Time: Do not show up late to an interview. It will leave a very poor first impression. On the same note, don't show up so early that it creates an inconvenience for your interviewer. It is best to arrive early and wait in your vehicle or a waiting area until 5-10 minutes prior to the start of your interview. Take steps to ensure your timing. Visit the facility in advance. Decide how long it will take for you to travel there in the event that there is traffic. If it is a big building, make sure you know where to go for your interview in advance. Doing so shows that you have gathered the information necessary to be prepared, have taken responsible steps to get there, and have proven your first level of dependability.

  4. Dress the Part: This speaks for itself. Dress neatly. Be well-groomed and clean. Remember, the outfit doesn't stop at the clothing. Carry copies of your resume and letters of recommendation in a fresh folder or brief case.

  5. Be personably professional: A job is not just the tasks at hand. Jobs require teamwork. When you work for an employer you will automatically become part of a team that will combine forces to accomplish a common goal. Be engaging, friendly, and professional.
